Adela's New Hair - Part 1

Here is Adela's new ringlets. I haven't styled them up too much yet so they are a little frizzy. I think I'm going to make her a barrette and pin the longer side of her hair back a little. I think she is looking much more like herself.

She is so sassy and perfect this way! I love it. :) Got any tips on how to achieve some "Effie Trinket" puffy curls with saran hair? I could seriously use some advice. lol

I like it. She looks great. I think a barrette would be very nice.

Cat - Do you have any clear pictures? The only ones I'm finding are a front view with half the head cut off. If you can give me a clear side picture I can probably tell you how to do it!

I can tell you that with Saran hair the one thing you'd have to worry about is volume control. Saran hair tends to fall limp over time which is very troublesome.

Oooh, I love em! Your spirals are so spirally... I tried to make spirals on one of my Monster High girls and it's just sad... so sad...

I have done spirals with Saran, and without some sort of product they fall. Here is a link to a picture of the exact curl I am supposed to do. http://img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2011/news/111128/elizabeth-banks-440.jpg

Any product you can recommend to hold the curls better?

Saran hair is such a pain in the butt. It's nice for long straight styles, but beyond that it's really difficult.

This is what I would recommend. Horizontally roll the hair pieces in the fattest pipe cleaners you can find pipe cleaners, fire up a teapot with boiling water in it and use a chopstick (or sometimes i just set the whole doll body) in the sink so that the head is upright. Wrap around the face and head with a piece of foil to keep everything in it's place but make sure there is an opening at the top so that the boiling water can actually touch the saran. Pour it over the dolls head for about 30 seconds. Quickly turn on your cold water and let it pour on top for about 30 seconds. Let her dry completely (usually 24 hours is what I do to be safe). Use a comb to tease out the saran and a razor to cut it short.

If her faceup is already done (and I think from reading your blog that it is!) you can try boiling the water in a regular pot and just carefully dunking her hair - and use a bowl for the cold water. I usually don't get the best results this way (though for Adela this is what i did).

As for hair products, I use what Jon Copeland calls "hair crack" that is Bedhead Manipulator. It's a kind of pomade. It works really well and smells fantastic. It's expensive but a container of it will last a looong time for dolls.

I hope that helps - I'm sorry if it's confusing. Doing doll hair is really not simple and I've spent alot of time perfecting my techniques. It takes a lot of practice!

Okay, I hate to sound completely stupid. lol But, when would I apply the "hair crack"?

I usually apply it at the end to tame the frizzies and help set the style, though it's not foolproof at setting the style. most of the style needs to really be set during the boiling process.

Hello from Spain: congratulations you made very pretty curls. Ever tried on some of my Barbies and is a very laborious task. Keep in touch.
